The first thing you will notice when you read the book of The Odyssey is that it is filled with wonderful tales of the gods and the goddesses. It is interesting to note, however, that the book was written centuries after the fact of the Trojan War. Why do we have such amazing stories about the gods and goddesses in Greek Mythology, while the Trojan War has been forgotten?
Nike was a goddess who helped Odysseus through the Trojan War and she was also a great warrior as well. She is the one who gave Odysseus good advice when he was on his journey home and in turn he gave her gifts and a beautiful necklace.
Nike had a son named Menelaus, who was the second son of Nike. Menelaus was a very handsome and courageous man. As a matter of fact it was his bravery that led him to be chosen as the king of Troy.
Nike had a son named Paris, who was a much loved god by all of the other gods. It was Paris, who was responsible for the Trojan War. His son Hector was a much admired hero of the Greeks.
Odysseus, the hero of the Odyssey was traveling along the shores of the Ionian Sea when he was faced with a choice. He could either return to Troy and tell his mother of his predicament or he could remain in Troy and attempt to find the goddess of his dreams. In choosing to stay he would be sacrificing the chance of having his revenge and winning back his freedom. Odysseus decided to return to Troy and told his mother of his decision.
When he arrived home, he received a beautiful necklace from his mother which was called Nike's Necklace. This necklace contained two stones which were said to ward off evil. When Odysseus returned home he began to search for the stones but before long he lost sight of them.
When Odysseus came to the top of the hill of Parnassus he could see two dark figures standing over him and he could feel the wrath of the gods. Odysseus knew then that he was about to have his revenge on the people of Troy.
Odysseus then went into a trance and took on the form of a god. With this power he transformed himself into the god of the sea, Poseidon. At the head of the Trojan line of Odysseus was now the king of Troy.
Odysseus made an agreement with Poseidon to have a contest of war in order to get revenge on Nike and to prove that he was worthy of her love. He gathered many other Trojan men and they joined him in this new alliance in an attempt to destroy Nike's ship the Olympia.
